What is DVR? DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder. DVR software is a set of computer applications and programs which help a computer in recognizing a DVR card installed in it. Compared to other conventional devices such as VCRs and tape recorders, a DVR is digitally manufactured software providing several features which are required for the storage and retrieval of high quality data. The DVR technology has found application in many fields like television, logistics, motion pictures, monitoring and surveillance to nae a few. How it works. There are two types of Digital Video Recorders. One is called Platform Dependent. It uses personal computers as the platform. This system gets the data from devices like camera and then controls the information by recording and storing information straight on to the hard disk of the computer. DVR software works in association with the installed DVR cards. The software provides different functions like video compression, managing the movement of camera, playback, display and conversion of the video images in files. The second one is called Platform Independent or stand-alone DVR. This kind of DVR system consists of a cabinet and vital sub devices like power supply, CPU, circuit boards and DVR related instruments. The software is embedded within the circuitry of the hardware. In comparison to the platform-dependent, stand-alone DVRs are less complicated and easier to use. Since the hardware and software are configured, it ensures greater performance level. The chance of conflict is also greatly reduced.

Advantages of DVR The very advantage of the DVR software lies in the storage and retrieval of data files. The DVR software helps in converting and storing data related with images and motion pictures into digital format. A DVR also enhances the pleasure of TV viewing. With a DVR, one can record about four program simultaneously. It is also possible to view two programs at a time. One can stop a replay, a live telecast, sequence, and even skip a commercial advertisement. A DVR has the capacity to store about 20 hrs or more of TV programming. That, however, depends upon the storage capacity available.
